2-2-3 calendar example

A 2-2-3 custody schedule example — four weeks, mapped day by day.

Here is what a 2-2-3 schedule actually looks like on a calendar: every overnight assigned, every exchange marked, and the two-week loop shown twice so the pattern is obvious.

7 nights each per 2 weeks

A true 50/50 split — about 182 overnights a year for each parent.

6 exchanges per cycle

Tue→Wed, Thu→Fri, Sun→Mon. Run them all through school and you never meet.

Repeats every 14 days

Week 3 is identical to Week 1, so the calendar is predictable forever.

The 2-2-3 calendar, four weeks at a glance

This is the standard 2-2-3 rotation with Parent A starting on Monday of week 1. Read each row left to right — the colour tells you who has the child overnight.

Week 2Parent BParent BParent AexchangeParent AParent BexchangeParent BParent B
Week 3Parent AParent AParent BexchangeParent BParent AexchangeParent AParent A
Week 4Parent BParent BParent AexchangeParent AParent BexchangeParent BParent B

Green = Parent A overnight, blue = Parent B overnight. "Exchange" marks the handoff day. Week 3 repeats Week 1 — the whole pattern is a two-week loop.

Reading the pattern

  • The day pairs never move. Mon-Tue is always one block, Wed-Thu always another, Fri-Sun always the weekend block.
  • Only ownership flips. Whoever had Mon-Tue this week has Wed-Thu next week.
  • The 3-day weekend alternates. That is where the "3" comes from, and it is the part parents most often get wrong when tracking it on paper.
  • Nothing resets at month end. The cycle is 14 days, so it will drift across the month — which is exactly why a paper calendar gets confusing by month three.

Turning the example into your actual calendar

Copy the grid above into a printable planner if you like, or start from the free 2-2-3 schedule template and fill in your own start date, exchange times, and locations.

If you would rather not maintain it by hand, the custody schedule generator builds the full year from a start date in seconds, and CustodyTrac's shared calendar keeps both households looking at the same version of it.

Overnight counts that matter for support

Most state child-support worksheets ask for annual overnights, not percentages. A clean 2-2-3 gives each parent 182 or 183 overnights a year — the line that triggers shared-parenting adjustments in many guideline formulas.

Run your own numbers with the custody percentage calculator and the state-by-state child support estimator, which applies your state's guideline model to the overnight split.

What you get

  • Week 1: A-A / B-B / A-A-A. Week 2: B-B / A-A / B-B-B.
  • Two-week loop — week 3 repeats week 1.
  • 7 overnights each per cycle; ~182 per year.
  • Six exchanges per two-week cycle.
  • Run exchanges through school to avoid contact.
  • Holidays override the grid, they don't shift it.
  • Free auto-generated template in CustodyTrac.
  • Both households see the identical calendar.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 2-2-3 custody schedule look like on a calendar?
Week 1: Parent A has Monday and Tuesday, Parent B has Wednesday and Thursday, Parent A has Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Week 2 flips: Parent B has Monday and Tuesday, Parent A has Wednesday and Thursday, Parent B has the Friday-to-Sunday weekend. Week 3 is identical to Week 1, so the whole calendar is a repeating two-week loop.
How many exchanges are in a 2-2-3 calendar?
Three exchanges per week, six per two-week cycle: Tuesday-to-Wednesday, Thursday-to-Friday, and Sunday-to-Monday. Most families do all three at school drop-off or pickup so the parents never have to meet.
Does each parent get the same number of nights?
Yes. Over the two-week cycle each parent has exactly 7 of the 14 overnights — a true 50/50 split. That means roughly 182–183 overnights a year each, which is the number most child-support worksheets ask for.
Which parent should start the 2-2-3 rotation?
It rarely matters legally, but pick the parent whose Monday routine is easier — school run, work start time, morning activities — and lock the day pairs in writing so the pattern never has to be renegotiated week to week.
How do holidays fit into a 2-2-3 calendar?
Holidays override the rotation rather than shifting it. Agree a separate holiday schedule (alternating years is most common), apply it on top of the 2-2-3 grid, and return to the normal pattern the next day — do not 'make up' the missed days unless your order says to.
Can I get this 2-2-3 calendar generated automatically?
Yes. CustodyTrac's calendar has a 2-2-3 template: pick your start date and which parent has Monday-Tuesday in week 1, and it fills in the full year with the correct alternating weekends for both households. It's free, with no premium tier.

Free for both parents. Forever.
